I recently spent two days on an After Effects training course in London. Even though I’ve been using After Effects for a while, I wanted to refine my skills and explore techniques that could make the event videos we produce even more engaging. It was also a good opportunity to see how After Effects fits into a wider workflow, especially since some colleagues work primarily in Premiere Pro.
Day one focused on refreshing the interface, project setup and compositions, and diving into motion graphics fundamentals. While I’m familiar with the basics, it was useful to revisit keyframes, timing and movement with a fresh perspective. The hands-on exercises, moving shapes, animating text and adjusting timing reinforced how subtle animation can elevate even the simplest sequences. I found myself experimenting with easing and speed adjustments, which instantly made even small movements feel more natural. For example, a well-timed lower-third or an animated title can instantly make a highlight reel feel more polished and professional.
Day two introduced more advanced techniques, including green screen work, lighting adjustments and basic 3D effects. Watching backgrounds replaced and elements integrated seamlessly was one of the highlights. It was particularly interesting to see how minor tweaks in lighting and shadows can completely change the perception of depth in a scene. Another key takeaway was revisiting the distinction between motion graphics and animation… motion graphics enhances visual elements, while animation often tells a story through movement.
Beyond the technical skills, it was valuable to see how After Effects interacts with other tools used by the team, giving me a better understanding of how my work can complement projects handled by colleagues on different software. It also reminded me that even with software I know well, there are always new tricks and workflows to learn.
By the end of the course, I felt inspired to apply these techniques to our event videos, from slick title sequences to animated overlays that give videos extra energy. It was a productive couple of days and it’s left me excited to push the creative possibilities of our videos further and to keep experimenting with ideas I hadn’t considered before.
